How I Journal My Trades

Keeping accurate records of past trades is a key to becoming a better trader.   My trading records have undergone many versions but this latest method has been working for me for awhile so I thought I would share it.

At times, I strove to keep everything in electronic format.  At other times, I neglected to keep any trading records at all.  Sometimes I kept records on loose sheets of paper with a printout of my charts.  I then proceeded to lose those papers.

My current system consists of this blog and a simple notebook.

The Notebook

I tried a couple of different notebooks, but the one that I like the most is the Moleskine Volant Notebook.  It is a large enough to take all the notes I need, but small enough to carry around when trading on the road.

I like the cover because it is made of plastic and is very durable.  I tape the corners with packing tape though because they have a tendency to fray after awhile.  Other than that, these are the best notebooks I have ever used.

The Blog

Starting this blog has been one of the best things that I have done for my trading because it has helped me network with other traders and gives me an easy way to keep a visual, chronological  record of my trading.

If you want to start your own blog to only journal your trades, I would suggest starting a free one at WordPress.com.  The WordPress platform is easy to use and can get you started right away.  Like with any other free service, there are limitations, but it should be good enough for most traders.

Another free blog website is Blogger.com.  I’m less of a fan of Blogger, because their templates look clunky and the blog is not as easy to use.  The upside however is that there are fewer limitations on the Blogger accounts than on WordPress.

Conclusion

So there you have it.  My setup may not work for you, but it is something that I find useful.
