How to Download Flash Videos From Websites

header-logo1Have you ever seen a really good video on YouTube or other flash video site and wished you could download it to view later?

I had that problem and I found the solution. Here it is:

First of all, I use Firefox as my browser.  I have found that it is the best PC browser out there.  Microsoft Internet Explorer is such a pain in the ass.  I don’t see why it has to take 30 minutes to install a browser. They make it way more complicated than it should be.

Anyway, I digress.  One of the great things about Firefox is that it has the capacity to add third party plug-ins to extend its functions.

Once you have downloaded Firefox, under the menu at the top, select: Tools –> Add-ons  –> Get Add-0ns.

Then in the upper right hand corner of the window that pops up, there will be a link that says “Browse All Add-ons.” Click that link and you will be taken to the Mozilla website.  In the search box, type in “downloadhelper” and hit Enter.

Video Downloadhelper will come up as the first result of the search.  Click the “Add to Firefox” button to install.

After Firefox restarts and the Add-on is installed, you will get a button on your menu bar that looks like this:

When you visit a website with downloadable videos on the page, the icon will become colored and start moving.  The moving is actually kind of distracting but I can live with it because it works.  Click the down arrow next to the icon and it will display a drop down list of the media that is available to download on that page.

Click the one you want and another menu will appear to the right.  Choose “Download” from the menu to download the video.  The Add-on allows you to the option to convert the video to your favorite format but you have to pay extra for that function.  Saving the file as a Flash movie works for me.

If you can’t play the movie once you have downloaded it, click here to download the free Flash Player from the Adobe website.  If you still can’t play it, the movie might be in a different format.  Click here to download the VLC movie player.  It isn’t the fanciest player but it is free and plays a lot of audio and video formats that Microsoft Media Player won’t play.

This works great when you have a instructional trading video (or any video for that matter) that you want to watch offline.  I can just take my laptop somewhere and not worry about having an internet connection.

I hope this helps!
