I have been looking for a way to add more monitors to my trading setup like this guy. He is either a rockstar trader or drastically overcompensating for something.

I don’t need that many monitors but I have come to a point where
more than one chart monitor would help a lot.
So serendipitously my friend gave me a call the other day and he will be giving me two 19″ LCD monitors this week that he doesn’t use anymore. This is fantastic, but creates a small problem. As I mentioned in a previous post, I use this really compact desktop computer to trade with, which is powerful and saves a lot of desk space (and my back whenever I have to move it) but doesn’t allow for video card expansion.
I looked into other solutions like the Digital Tigers SideCar but that is at least $1,200. For that price, I would rather buy a whole new trading computer.
There has to be a better way! There is so much great stuff out there today that you usually don’t have to spend a ton of money to solve a problem. You just have to uncover the solution.
My first thought of course, was to look around eBay to see if there are any used/cheap SideCars for sale. I didn’t find a cheap SideCar but I did discover these products:
They essentially turn any USB 2.0 port into another monitor output and they only cost between $60-100 per monitor. The reviews say that they work pretty well, so that is the answer!
Not enough USB ports? Just add a USB Hub.
That actually just gave me another idea (caution, tangent coming)! I have a special USB Hub that attaches to a wireless router which allows me to print or backup my computers wirelessly because they can share the same resources via the Hub. It works great! So, theoretically I could get another wireless router/bridge and another USB Hub and attach multiple monitors to the hub.
Now you are probably wondering, “So what is the point of that you dork?” Well, essentially that would be like having the monitors wirelessly connected to the computer, so….you could watch your trades in the bathroom! Holy crapper, best invention EVER!
You think I’m a weirdo? Check out this article about watching TV in the bathroom as related to your income. Pretty funny but probably true. Have you been to the ESPN Zone restaurants? Toilet TV’s baby!
But that is all beside the point, so I digress.
But there you have it! An inexpensive way to add more monitors to your existing computer and possibly a way to trade anywhere in your home. Be sure to check that your computer can handle these adapters and check with your spouse for approval on “Bloomberg in the Bathroom.” And don’t forget to wash your hands.
Feel free to let me know about your trading setup, leave a comment!
